The arithmetic

How the estimate is calculated

  • The premiums. I/O-Optimized prices storage at 2.25× ($0.225 vs $0.10 per GB-month) and instances at 1.30×, and drops per-request I/O charges.
  • Extra cost = 1.25 × monthly storage cost + 0.30 × monthly instance cost. You save if your monthly I/O cost is above that.
  • Rule of thumb (AWS). Once I/O is more than about 25% of your total Aurora bill, I/O-Optimized usually wins. The calculator uses us-east-1 list prices.
