EC2 Retype ECS Fargate Tasks
RetypeECS Fargate Tasks
Optimize ECS Fargate task CPU and memory at the service level for cost savings. CloudFix analyzes Fargate utilization and right-sizes task definitions.
What happens, in order.
Finder · read-only
Finds the opportunity
Scans your connected accounts with a read-only role. It can see resource metadata and usage; it can’t change anything.

Approve in Recommendations
It appears in your Recommendations view with what it would save. Approve the resources you choose. Nothing has changed yet.
Fixer
Runs in your account
The fixer runs as an AWS Systems Manager Automation runbook in your AWS account, and acts only on the resources you approved.
Record
Logs the execution
The Systems Manager execution is logged, so every change can be audited.
Finder role
Read-only. It can see resource metadata and usage. It can’t change anything.
Fixer role
A separate, minimal role that acts only on the resources you approved, through AWS Systems Manager.

This Finder cuts ECS Fargate costs by looking at usage across each service rather than one task at a time. It finds services whose tasks are consistently allocated more CPU and memory than they use, and recommends right-sized settings that keep performance intact.
CloudFix’s ECS Fargate Service-Level Optimization feature enhances cost optimization in ECS Fargate environments by analyzing and optimizing at the service level rather than individual tasks. This approach provides more accurate and actionable recommendations while maintaining performance and reliability.
Overview
Problem Statement
Traditional approaches to ECS Fargate optimization often focus on individual task-level analysis, which can be data-intensive and less actionable. This granular approach may miss broader patterns and opportunities for optimization at the service level, potentially leading to inefficient resource allocation and higher costs.
AWS Services Affected
How It Works
The Finder works read-only from your cost and usage data, the services’ CPU and memory utilization, and AWS Compute Optimizer to find ECS Fargate services whose tasks are consistently over-provisioned. Each opportunity appears in your CloudFix Recommendations with suggested CPU and memory settings for the service. Once you approve, the service is updated with the new CPU and memory allocation using a rolling update, so it stays available throughout.
FAQ
Is it possible to rollback the changes?
Yes, the previous CPU and memory settings can be restored at any time through the ECS console.
Does this fix require downtime?
No. ECS services can be reconfigured using rolling updates that maintain service availability throughout the process.
Can CloudFix implement the fix automatically?
Not fully. Today the change is applied manually or semi-automatically, and nothing changes until you approve the recommendation.
