How It Works

The Finder reviews your EBS volume usage, read-only, to identify volumes that are consistently overprovisioned. It forecasts future storage needs and leaves headroom for growth, then lists volumes with meaningful savings potential in your Recommendations, along with a recommended size.

This is a guided fix that you apply. Because an EBS volume cannot be reduced in place, the change is a migration: take a snapshot of the current volume as a safety net, create a new volume at the recommended size, copy the data across with a file-system-level tool, then point the instance or application at the new volume and delete the old one once you have verified it. Plan the cut-over for a maintenance window, and update any related documentation or alert thresholds afterwards.

What are the potential savings?

You stop paying for the capacity you remove, so savings depend on how far a volume is overprovisioned. The Finder focuses on volumes where the savings justify a migration.

Can EBS shrink a volume in place?

No. Elastic Volumes lets you increase a volume’s size, change its type and adjust its performance without detaching it, but it cannot decrease its size. Shrinking means creating a new, smaller volume and copying the data onto it.

Is this change automatic?

No. This is a guided fix: CloudFix recommends the size and you carry out the migration, or engage CloudFix Professional Services to do it for you.

Does this fix require downtime?

Usually some. Copying the data can run while the original volume is in use, but switching the instance or application to the new volume typically needs a short maintenance window, and a boot volume requires the instance to be stopped.

What volumes are excluded from analysis?

The Finder skips volumes that are unsafe to change, and you can exclude any volumes you do not want modified.

How do you ensure sufficient capacity?

The Finder leaves headroom above observed usage and uses historical usage to forecast future needs, so the recommended size accommodates normal growth. If a volume later needs more space, Elastic Volumes can grow it in place.

Can changes be rolled back?

Yes, as long as you keep the snapshot or the original volume until the new one is verified. Reattach the original volume, or restore it from the snapshot, to return to the previous state.
